Walter Murrin (1895-1975)

I've started doing genealogical research on Sandra's and my family.

One person that peaked my interest was Walter Murrin, the half-brother of my paternal grandmother, Annie Drover, whose common parent was George William (Billy) Murrin.

When George William (Billy) Murrin was born on October 10, 1866, in Spaniards Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, his father, Thomas, was 52 and his mother, Mary, was 40.

He married Mary Ann Neil and they had four children together, the second child being Walter in 1895.

Mary Ann Neil died in 1912.

Billy Murrin then married Mary Bridget Franey (Phrayne) (Feeney) in 1915 and they had three children together, the third child being my grandmother Anne Louise Murrin.

Billy Murrin died on August 19, 1930, in his hometown at the age of 63.

Although there is no headstone, this is a picture of where Billy Murrin is buried.  I know because my grandmother, who was just a child when he died, maintained the grave all her life.

Some other information I have gathered about Walter.

This is his Baptismal Certificate – fourth from the top.

He joined the Royal Newfoundland Regiment (RNR) during WWI - https://livesofthefirstworldwar.iwm.org.uk/lifestory/3189140

He was on the rolls for the RNR at Beaumont Hamel - http://www.newfoundlandandthesomme.com/regiment/nominal_roll_of_other_members_of.htm

He returned from Europe one 20 Aug 1917, arriving in Quebec with a final destination of Newfoundland on the ship, S. S. Scotian. Here is the manifest.  He can be found about six from the bottom and is listed among “Wounded Soldier’s Returning Home.”

Although I have not yet found a marriage record, it looks like he married Edith Bradbury not long after his return because in the 1921 census, he and Edith were listed as married and living at the Hibb’s Hole Light House in Port de Grave, NL, where he was the Light Keeper.

Here is the census, they are two and three from the bottom.

The next record I have is of Walter and Edith Murrin living in Verdun Quebec in the 1931 census.  Numbers 32 and 33 below.

Their son, Walter Winston Murrin was baptized at St. Clement’s Church in Verdun, Quebec on 23 November 1941.

The final fact I have is that Walter Murrin was buried at the National Field of Honour Cemetery, Pointe-Claire, Montréal Region, Québec, Canada

This is the only photo I have of him.
